Gov. Schreiber to speak about Alzheimer's caregiving

Former Wisconsin Gov. Schreiber to speak about Alzheimer's caregiving during Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month.

Former Wisconsin Gov. Martin J. Schreiber continues the most important campaign of his life when he visits Dwight Foster Public Library on Wednesday, June 12 at 6:30 pm to talk about the challenges of being an Alzheimer's caregiver.

Schreiber will share what he has learned, which is included in his award-winning book, "My Two Elaines: Learning, Coping, and Surviving as an Alzheimer's Caregiver," so others don't experience the learning curve he did. He will also lead a discussion of the book. The library has copies of the book available for check out now. Call (920) 563-7790 to get a copy to read. Registration for this program is recommended. The first 15 households/individuals that register will get a free, signed copy of the book to keep.

"My Two Elaines" will be available for purchase in both book form and as a set of three CDs, narrated by Schreiber and his children. Net proceeds from sales are used to promote Alzheimer's caregiver support.

"My Two Elaines" is a guide for Alzheimer's families and caregivers as well as a love story that spans more than 60 years. Schreiber's wife Elaine was officially diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease 11 years ago and since then, he has worked tirelessly to be a caregiver and loving spouse to someone who no longer recognizes him. He refers to the woman with whom he fell in love in high school, married, raised a family and ran political campaigns as his first Elaine, and today's sweet, sensitive woman who remembers nothing about their past as his second. He speaks about the need for caregivers to build support systems and self-care, which are among the things he failed to do early on.

Like many thrown into the heartbreaking Alzheimer's world, Schreiber knew little about the disease. What he found most disturbing was that even healthcare providers don't know the degree to which Alzheimer's affects the person who lives with it and his or her family.

"If Alzheimer's is bad, ignorance of the disease is worse," he said. Visit mytwoelaines.com for more detailed information about the book and Schreiber’s work.

This program is free and open to the public. Contact the library at (920) 563-7790 to register and get a copy of “My Two Elaines” to read before the program.

Inside View of Dementia

The Aging and Disability Resource Center of Jefferson County will host a unique opportunity for family caregivers to briefly, yet movingly, experience the challenges and struggles of a person living with dementia.

Dementia Live™ is an innovative program designed by a team of dementia, sensitivity and awareness, and professional development experts from the nationally recognized AGE-u-cate® Training Institute headquartered in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.

We are living in a fast-aging world.”
